Help support Karen Beatty, one of our wonderful Media Box employees, as she walks in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day to help raise money for breast cancer research. The 60 mile walk takes place in Washington DC, September 23rd - 25th.

Every little bit helps!

SPARKcon is a showcase of creativity, talent and ideas of “The Creative Hub of the South,” the Triangle area of North Carolina. Now in its 5th year, this year’s SPARKcon took over all of downtown Raleigh with hundreds of events, performances, and workshops, including over 1700 different local artists.  With such a “creative potluck” right in our backyard, we couldn’t wait to get involved. Knowing that thousands of visitors would need an easy way to follow and spread the word about the wide variety of events, we decided to take the SPARKcon experience to another level and help develop the conference’s first mobile phone app.

For anyone with an Android based phone, our SPARKcon application provides lists of all the latest events information. The app also provides check-in capability with TriOut and FourSquare taking advantage of mobile phone cameras and QR code technology for the festival’s check-in services.

The addition of a mobile application supporting the event not only raises the level of innovation, but also helps increase the Triangle’s reputation nationally as a magnet for the creative use of technology.

So Photoshop CS5 is out and you either have a copy you're playing with or you're watching the videos and reading the online posts and reviews drooling over the new tools. After watching the demos and reading what Photoshop CS5 has to offer, I got my hands dirty to see to for myself. Here are my fav-5 new tools in Photoshop CS5 as a multimedia designer.

We opened the Media Box Raleigh office just over a year ago, and one of the main reasons we chose this location was to tap into and join this city's thriving creative community.  SPARKcon is an annual "Open Source" festival and showcase of creative talent in the Triangle area that embodies the dynamism of collaboration, thought, and creativity that brought us here in the first place.

I had the opportunity to participate with other artists in a SPARKcon exhibit called the Experimental Video Lounge.  Together with my friend Tom Drewes, I created a piece titled "Wenotype" that could be described as an animated, interactive, evolutionary, generative artwork.  The piece uses analog buttons and a rotary knob connected to an Arduino microcontroller and laptop running a Flash Actionscript program, which allows viewers to evolve a randomly generated canvas by selecting their favorite "children" and adjusting the amount of genetic variation from generation to generation.

SPARKcon was a great success, and I look forward to future collaborations with other Raleigh creatives throughout the community!
