February 2012 - The U.S. Army is preparing to roll out their next generation of mobile electric power generating sources. Years ago, Tactical Operations Centers (TOCs) only had a few computers and communication devices. Today, as new equipment and systems are added to the TOCs, the need for more power is in high demand. The U.S. Army will replace its aging Tactical Quiet Generator (TQG) fleet with the new Advanced Mobile Medium Power Sources (AMMPS) that will be lighter, more fuel efficient, quieter and will reduce the logistical requirements on the battlefield.

Media Box Studios has been awarded the contract to write and develop 23 hours of computer based training (CBT) that will be split into multiple courses. Alongside embedded instructors, these courses will help teach troops how to both operate and maintain the AMMPS generator sets in the field. Media Box Studios is developing the courses under a rapid development cycle to get the product out to the troops to meet the immediate demand on time and within budget.

The U.S. Army has put a high importance on training personnel as soon as the generators hit the ground. Our challenge is to create the CBT with clear and engaging content with the final product delivered in synch with the first shipment of AMMPS sets. With this in mind, Media Box Studios is reverse-engineering the processes and procedures that troops will actually execute in the field, and by doing so we are able to create an accurate and realistic online training environment. Additionally, we are building the courses with rich, interactive 3D and vector graphics and professional narration. The end result will not only educate students with the necessary training to operate and maintain the generator sets, it will also engage them, increasing retention and reducing learning time.

Carter Cross, our 3D guru at Media Box, has developed a plugin for Cinema 4D called Primitive Sketch. It allows you to create primitive objects anywhere on the grid as well as on other objects and planes. Stop moving and rotating your objects into place, just click, drag and size it up! Save yourself time, improve your workflow and have more fun when modeling in Cinema.

Two versions are available for download. The free version gives you the ability to draw on the home grids, while the $5 paid version also gives you the ability to draw on other objects and construction planes.

At Media Box Studios, we never stop pushing technology "outside of the box." With the growing demand for mobile devices and the reinvention of the tablet, Media Box started exploring ways we could give our government clients a way to access reference manuals and learn.

We created a mobile version of one of our eLearning courses - complete with interactive comprehension checks, as well as an easy-to-use digital ITEM that allows you to search for items, zoom into images and check off a list of procedures on both the iPad and the GalaxyTAB.

There are so many possibilities with mLearning (mobile eLearning). We have entertained the idea of integrating courseware into an IETM - imagine reading a technical manual a being able to link directly to the robust, interactive lesson right there, on the fly, for a refresher.

But mLearning can also go beyond government and military applications. Are you a plumber, electrician or even a television technician? What if you could open up an app dedicated for your specific maintenance task and be able to read through directions with descriptive animations and check steps off as you go?

It sounds cool, but what are the other reasons for taking advantage of tablet technology? Commercial tablets are cost effective. They provide low cost solutions that will keep your employees happy and reduce the amount of time you need to spend on device training.
